TV is the New Reading

There’s ‘Dr. No,’ and then

there’s ‘Dr. Absolutely Not’

Would you honestly take personality makeover advice from a hyperactive, self-mutilating weirdo?

If the USA premiere of “Dr. Steve-O” Monday at 10 p.m. is as silly and pointless as I’m guessing it will be, I’m thinking the “Will & Grace” reruns on Lifetime are reasonably safe.

Seriously, what happened to the creative energy that was bursting forth from cable television all summer long? We had some outstanding storytelling on TNT from “The Closer” and “Saving Grace,” and on USA with “Monk” and “Psych” and “The 4400” and “The Dead Zone.”

Now we hit the fall premieres and what we’ve got from USA is “Dr. Steve-O” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” (shudder – really, D’Onofrio, canceled is canceled. Let it go.) and Spike TV is giving us “Manswers” Wednesdays at 11 p.m.

“Manswers” asks important questions that explore hard-hitting topics like dwarf-tossing and bestiality and how drunk can you get before you die. Then it slaps together a bunch of drunken and random footage meant to “answer” them.

No. Don’t tune in. It’s dumb. You’ll have to scrape the parts of your brain it gets into before the dumbness spreads.

Looking ahead

“Dr. Steve-O” (who is nothing like a real doctor by the way – seriously, he may be missing a chromosome) isn’t the only premiere next week, thank goodness.

Tuesday night on ABC at 7 p.m. there are ... “Cavemen.” Oy. Well, it might be funny enough to sit through on your way to the premiere of “Carpoolers” at 7:30 p.m. That one seems cool enough.

Wednesday night at 7 p.m. is the much anticipated premiere of ABC’s heavily promoted “Pushing Daisies,” which looks quirky and fun and sweet and macabre all at once.

Thursday sees the return of “Supernatural” at 8 p.m. on the CW, and fan-fave “Friday Night Lights” returns 8 p.m. on Friday on NBC.

Leading the way is ABC’s Sunday night line-up this weekend, kicking off a new season of storylines for “Desperate Housewives” at 8 p.m. and “Brothers & Sisters” at 9 p.m.

In any event, there’s all sorts of “new” to watch, so tune in, check it out and enjoy!
